Why I Prefer to Eat at Home, Alone, part 1

one of few times, wish i was in army
it's really an activity that i very much prefer to do alone. i don't understand the social aspect: you're eating. your mouth is occupied. why the hell should i talk? much less entertain as some want me to do? and going on a rendezvous (my fancy name for the queer word "date"): forget it! i don't want her seeing me not know how to eat French (food that is, haha).

it's actually one of the very few times that i don't even  enjoy reading: that shows you how much i want to chill out when i eat.

but believe it or not i love to eat at restuarants (alone): love sitting, relaxing, the possbilit of a good big meal etc. but it realy is a crappy deal: meal mark ups are so big, so many meals i've had i felt that  i could  buy the materials  in the stoer for much cehaper, , work on them  a little and it would  be compaarable. and im no sharp cook.  plus the burden's on you to tip or you look cheap and the waiter earns minimum wage or less, which really isn't your fault but it's dumped  on you.

also health-wise: who  knows how many calories/fat/salt etc are iny the food. even NYC doesn't require them to publish it on the menus. plus i usually overstuff myself,  and then  need to sh--t where i eat at times (shout, haha).

again at home: private, your own time, could be much healthier and cheaper, you can do whatever the hell you want, with who you want

  1. I like eating alone as well. Now, being married, I also like dining with my wife. One of usually cooks something most nights, and we dine out a few times a month. But at least half of our meals are consumed alone, because of our different schedules...and you know what...we're OK with it. Or at least I am. My wife talks so much that I'm usually done before she's had three bites. Regarding the pricing. Being in the business...I do understand and can see why people get a little perturbed at the mark-up in pricing. The thing is, the markup pays for everything..the employees.workers comp insurance, electricity, the ambiance, the music, everything is included in that glass of wine or filet mignon. People say to me..."I can buy a whole bottle of this wine at a store down the street for the cost that you're charging me for one glass!" I know. You're drinking it out of a glass that costs $15-$18...more than your house, probably. You're being served by any one of four bartenders who have 20+ years experience each, and give you a healthy pour. Your sitting at a 100= year old oak bar, free live piano, free valet parking, and you don't have to clean up or get your kitchen all smoky. That's what your paying for. Not just the glass of wine. "Now, if that's all you want(this is me telling THEM, not you), than go home with that bottle, clean the wine glass that is cheaper and dirty, sit on your couch with a hole in it, watch a rerun of Law&Order and be happy."

  2. don't know if u remember the Cheers episode (early): Sam asks Diane why folks come to a bar. she said (in her intellectual air): to drink. he said wrong: it's to shoot their mouths off. they can drink for cheap at home.

  3. So true. And even being in the business I forget that sometimes. I get so aggravated and exasperated. But I have to remind myself that's why they're coming here. And thank God, or I'd be out of a job. As a customer, i don't do this. I bring a book, newspaper,Racing form, and in some bars out here, cigarettes to keep me occupied. I don't need a bartender/server to give me the song & dance. Small talk, if they're not busy, and that's it. I have a few guys like that and they are great. My best tippers as well. Wish I had 30 of them!
