i've lived in a few highly ethnic neighborhoods now: Greek (from Greece), Mexican, refugees, black, white. worked with many different groups too: Arab (from mid east), Italian, gay, hippies, Irish, poor, mid class.
and what i say above is true: no group is all bad, every single member, and no group is immune from awful members. there's white trash, black, Arab, etc. every group has it.
when we all realize this and see individual behavior as individual, and not representative of the entire group, then we will be less bigoted.

This is true. It seems so basic and yet so many people don't seem to get it. Hell, it even extends to dog breeds. There is breed specific legislation that targets whole breeds of dogs as if every singel one of those dogs are bad. When in reality, as in everything, it should be dealt with on a case by case basis. Anyway, I don't mean to get up on my own soapbox on your page, but yes, I agree with ya!
ReplyDeletethanks Rene. unfortunately the bias goes throughout society: some folks get drunk on the subway late at nite, and you can't have 1 beer at all on a subway after a 12 hour shift. one family builds a fire in their backyard and burns 1000 acres down, so no fires in any backyards. that's a lame part of society: a few bad apples (or dogs haha)....and don't worry about writing a lot on my page i welcome it
ReplyDeletein fact you gave me an idea for another blog post
ReplyDeleteI always thought the term 'white trash' was racist. Why can't they just be called trash? To insert the term 'white' before trash, indicates that all people of color ARE trash, and white people generally are not, therefore, people need to delineate by saying "white trash"...otherwise, they would just say 'trash', w/o having to put white in front of it. Do you kind of understand what I'm saying?
ReplyDeletei understand. see another of my posts: "but Im not a racist". also like when folks go thru a "rough' neighborhood and describe it as one with a lot of black people.
