New York: Nonexistant "Too Big to Fail"

one of the amazing deals about NYC: literally nothing's "too big to fail"

one of the most famous restaurants in the whole city, Tavern on the Green, is done

  • the original Penn Station was supposed to be more magnificent than Grand Central
  • the MTA is by far the biggest public transit administrator in the nation and it's always deeply in financial problems
  • CBGBS was internationally famous
  • the NY Giants had been at the Polo Grounds for around 75 years and several world championships. after the neighborhood started to fail, attendance was down (even right after a championship with Willie Mays), calls from the West, etc, the Giants moved and the legendary stadium destroyed. (fact: the Giants have never won it all since). the football Giants also won several championships there.

even with NYC preservation, legendary sites like CBGBS, Tavern on the Green and probably soon, St Vincent's hospital, have been destined to fail in this so capitalistic, competitive, often exclusive, diverse, changing city

  1. Well put,Ken. Regarding MTA, same thing in LA. Jackie used to work for them(ten years). They are always in the news for lack of funds, misuse, etc. I think it's the nature of the beast...and a lot of room for graft. Ha-ha.

  2. i remember she worked for them. by the way the girlfriend i had in L.A. was named Jackie too. any way i guess the MTA is always lacking funds like governments are always going bust i suppose. seems like awful management, and not enough Clinton esque taxes of the well off.

  3. Being a lifelong Liberal Democrat, and almost socialist many years ago, I've never had a problem with taxes. I suppose because I've always been poor, never owned any property...therefore, never paid much in taxes. Regarding MTA...yes. It's a constant jugling act with budget and grants(which is exactly what Jackie did). I wish I would have met with you when you were out here...but as I say, I'm pretty anti-social. You'd never know it by talking to me, but people don't see the anxiety raging underneath it all. Haha.

  4. well if im not mistaken, in places like Europe when they have "soak the rich" taxes, guess what: they're still rich afterwards. when Clinton taxed the rich harder, our economy improved and we had a budget surplus.

with the MTa here it seems like constant tug of war between them and Albany, where the state has reneged on promised;/necessary funds.

hopefully i'll be back there some time. if u come back here (at all) let us know. i understand the anxiety.
